SCCA National COVID-19 Updates

All Programs and concerned members,

COVID-19 Guidelines are being revised this week and updated as needed going forward. Current status

Based on the revised CDC guidelines surrounding COVID-19 released May 13, 2021, the SCCA National Office and senior staff are revising the SCCA COVID-19 Event Protocol for participants, event support, staff and drivers as follows for all National-led events. We recommend this course of action for Regions as appropriate, and as local/venue guidelines allow.

Guidelines

  • If you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19, masks are no longer required indoors or outdoors UNLESS local regulatory authorities or venues have specific mask requirements in place.

  • If you are not vaccinated, you may still attend and participate in SCCA events. However, in line with the latest CDC guidelines, it is recommended that you continue to wear a mask indoors and when near others. This is subject to any mask requirements by local regulatory authorities and/or venue management.

  • When in doubt, all event organizers should continue to “look local” to ensure we meet any and all local COVID-19 protocol requirements.

  • Regardless of any national or local directives, all individuals remain free to wear a mask in any setting at any SCCA event, should they choose to.

Additional Guidelines
SCCA National Staff is reviewing and updating special-case guidelines for loaner helmets, passenger ride-alongs and similar event-specific elements. We expect to publish those on this page later in the week of May 17. Watch scca.com for further updates.

SCCA Member of Excellence and Woolf Barnato Award Winners

Two of Washington DC Regions finest were recognized  as the 2021 SCCA National Convention opened on Saturday, with the traditional SCCA Hall of Fame and Awards Ceremony.

SCCA Hall of Fame inductees were joined by the newly selected SCCA Member of Excellence and Woolf Barnato Award Winners, Bob Crawford and Dennis Dean.

The Member of Excellence is annually presented to the volunteer who shows the greatest commitment to SCCA Motorsports activities. The recipient is given the opportunity to attend any motorsport event of their choosing—with an expense cap of $5000—anywhere on the planet.

Crawford, a Washington DC Region member, was introduced by SCCA President Michael Cobb as the “poster child of the welcoming environment that we are striving to deliver to members” for his work throughout his Region’s road racing program.

“I’m honored, humbled and grateful for this award,” Crawford said. “It is a privilege to serve as a leader in this great organization and an opportunity I cherish.”

The Woolf Barnato Award is recognized as SCCA’s highest award and is presented to a member who has made an outstanding, long-term contribution to the Club. Dean, already a part of the SCCA Hall of Fame, received the 2020 edition of the award.

“I still feel like the widow who listened to the preacher’s kind eulogy and then whispered to one of her children, ‘run up there and make sure that’s your daddy in that box,’” a humbled Dean said. “As I look at the list of prior Woolf Barnato Award winners, the vast majority of who I can consider personal friends, I am humbled beyond words. To be placed in the same category as any of them would honor any Club member. To now join the ranks of the entire group is almost unimaginable.”

To say this has been a very interesting and challenging season is an enormous understatement. Speaking on behalf of the Washington DC Region Road Racing Program,

I am very proud of all our dedicated volunteers who made it possible to get back to holding events during this global pandemic. Preparing for an event takes an enormous amount of planning and work in non-COVID times and ever so much more with the addition of COVID restrictions and guidelines. The amazingly professional road racing committee team stepped up to the challenge and put together two incredible events, please take the opportunity to thank them for their dedication and countless hours of work to make it possible. Additionally, the team at Summit Point has been a great partner and incredibly accommodating in navigating the restrictions placed on motorsports in West Virginia. Finally, the dedicated drivers who helped by following the social distancing and mask wearing guidelines to keep the event in compliance with the ever-changing rules, thank you for supporting the Washinton DC Region MARRS events this year.

Work is already underway to plan for the 2021 season. We are working with the Motorsports team at Summit Point to schedule a full complement of dates for next year. We'll soon be meeting with the NeDiv council and our partners SJR and NCR to coordinate a full schedule of events for 2021.

Please continue to be safe and healthy, we look forward to seeing you in 2021 for an exciting season with the MARRS series.

Thank You

Bob Crawford - Director of Road Racing, Washington DC Region SCCA - Volunteer

Build, Break, Fix, Repeat Podcast featuring WDCR members Joe Obernberger, Baron Mills, and Travis Dixon

From Break/Fix:

Episode title: The New & Improved SCCA HPDE

A panel of folks from the Washington DC region of the Sports Car Club of America (WDCR SCCA) joined Break/Fix to educate us on their new & improved High Performance Drivers Education (HPDE) program. With us was Chief Instructor Joe Obernberger, Assistant Chief Instructor Baron Mills and former HPDE chairman Travis Dixon.

Our goal is to continue the conversation we’ve been having with our listeners over several Break/Fix episodes where we introduce the idea of High Performance Driving to folks that are new to Motorsports; Folks who are curious about what they can do with the sports car they have sitting in their garage - or maybe aren’t aware that organizations like SCCA offer a service like HPDE.
